Hello! We are the Maple class and our teacher is called Miss. Richardson. We have a teaching assistant called Mrs. Third and a cleric called Mrs. Roache.
Below is an overview of what we will be learning about this term.
Literacy
Revise and extend their knowledge and understanding of spelling rules.
Explore vocabulary used for setting the mood in a story. Children will write a range of descriptions of different settings.
Read a range of poetry. Write their own poem following a structure.
Handwriting – focus on forming and joining letters correctly.
Numeracy
Children will learn mental strategies and written methods for addition and subtraction. They will be working on multiplication and division facts for the 2,3,5 and 10 times tables.
Children will learn the properties of shape. They will begin to measure using rulers, weighing scales, measuring jugs and thermometers.
Data handling – collect and represent data using tally charts, bar graphs, etc.
Children will apply their knowledge to solve real life mathematical problems.
Science
Plants – children will look at the life cycle of plants and learn that plants provide food for humans and that different parts of the plant can be eaten. They will investigate how plants need the right amount of water, light and warmth in order for them to grow well.
Geography
Children will use maps at a variety of scales to locate the position and geographical features of rainforests in the world. They will explore how the nature of the rainforests affects the lives of people and the environment.
History
Children will identify why people explored other lands in the past. They will develop an understanding of the differences between invading and settling.
ICT
Internet – developing research skills.
Children will look at how to combine graphics and text.
PE
Children will learn the basic concepts of Invasion Games. In Gymnastics, the focus will be on balance and creating controlled sequences.
Art
Children will be focusing on the visual elements of line, tone and texture and the process of drawing. Children will explore the work of the artist, Henri Rousseau.
DT
Children will look at food preparation, hygiene and storage. They will create and evaluate their own fruit salad.
Children will create a food package for a given purpose.
RE
Children will look at charities supporting the rainforests. Children will identify some key symbols, including religious symbols.
Music
Singing a variety of songs. Exploring sounds – how sounds can represent particular animal movements.
PSHE
Discussion on topical issues regarding the rainforests. Children will develop an understanding of how their actions effect themselves and others. Children will learn about common substances and drugs and develop an awareness of their effects and risks.
French
Children will learn how to greet, say their name, numbers 1-10.
